Mr. Kim's Training Session
Students often ask Mr. Kim about how they can improve their Tae Kwon Do skills outside of the Dojang. And, if you've been paying attention to the Focus of the Month articles over the past couple of months, its obvious that consistent practice and persistance are part of the formula. In addition to regular participation in class, advanced students (especially Black Belts) should try to develop a self practice. Presented below is a sample general training session that Mr. Kim uses:
Mr. Kim's training session:
Start with 10 min. jump rope
Next, 2 rounds (2 min. each) shadow sparring or no contact sparring with a partner
Wall stretching (1 min. each):
Slow kicks, 5 each, front, round, and side kicks
Kick Drills for speed on hand target (10 kicks: front, round, hook, crescent kicks)
*Double kicks (10 kicks: front/round, round/round, hook/round, round/hook, crescent/round, inside round/round)
*Reverse kicks (10 kicks: hook, crescent, and side kicks)
Kick Drills for power on shield target (10 kicks: round, side and reverse side kicks)
Bag work (2 min. rounds)
100 push ups and abdominal work (100 - 1000 situp/crunch variations)
End the session with stretching:
partner kick stretches
full stretching
*if time allows
Following the training session on a regular basis is the most important aspect, rather than specific numbers or repitition. The training session presented here may not be appropriate or realistic for every student. Determine what your goals are and create a training formula to suit your own needs and follow it consistently.
