Yong Studios Instructors - Interview with Mr. Hounsell

Mr. Hounsell earned his Black Belt at Yong Studios. His dedication and rigorous approach, coupled with his enthusiasm and communication skills have made him a valuable asset to the Studio. He assists in teaching several of the children's classes and is always around to help students on an individual basis.

Q: What inspired you to start studying martial arts?

I was introduced to Yong Studios by a good friend. I was just ten at the time, but had already been exposed to martial arts five years earlier. My first time was with a program at school. The teacher was not very good and I did not last long. This time, however, I took the introductory class and immediately loved studying at Yong Studios. I have been taking classes here ever since, and received my Black Belt.

Q: How has the study of martial arts changed your life?

I have met many great people and made new friends while studying Tae Kwon Do. I have been learning a great martial art and have had a great time doing that. I am always learning new things. Most importantly, I was able to achieve greater self-discipline, which has helped me greatly in other aspects of my life.

Q: What do you enjoy most about teaching martial arts?

The best part of teaching martial arts, for me, is when the kids I teach are having a great time and show interest in what is going on. This makes teaching the difficult parts much more fun for them and for me. The teaching is easier and more enjoyable. I can have a great time by helping the students with their problems while I correct mine at the same time.

Q: What keeps you here?

Martial arts always gives me something new to learn. There are long complex forms and combinations to master as you move through the belts. I also enjoy the friendships and have a great time whenever I am at the studio. I am also learning to teach, which is a major reason I love being here. It is a great way to get to know students. I believe Mr. Kim is a great instructor, and enjoy being at the studio because of his teaching.
