Yong Studios Instructors - Interview with Mr. Johnson
Q: What inspired you to start studying martial arts?
I used to think that people who could kick were just cool. Whether
it was a martial artist in a movie or one of my friends showing me
moves, I just thought a well-executed kick rocked. Now that I know what
goes into a kick, I still think that. I also like the totality of martial
arts. The physical, the mental, and the spiritual aspects really center
me more than any other sport, and I've participated in a lot of sports:
hockey, soccer, tennis, baseball, running. But I've never felt like a
soccer player, a tennis player, a runner. I feel like a martial artist.
Q: How has the study of martial arts changed your life?
I'm more disciplined in almost every part of my life. I don't let
things slide as "good enough" because I know that "good enough" is not going
to earn me my third degree. Whenever I'm faced with a task, whether
dealing with a problem at work, backpacking through the wilderness, or
sparrring a tough opponent, my first instinct is, "I can do this. I'm a
black belt."
Q: What do you enjoy most about teaching martial arts?
I like seeing the "A-ha!" moment from students, which is that moment
when the student understands the concept for what it is, what it's
supposed to do, and why we execute it that way. I also like the challenge
that being "the instructor" presents. When I'm teaching a class, I know
that I've got to be the best person in the room at what I'm teaching. If
I'm not, I know it's time to work harder. It's definitely an "all boats
rise" setting.
Q: What keeps you here?
The atmosphere at the studio is ideal for me. Everyone is here to work
hard and improve their skills, not to prove a point or show off. I also
like the very traditional nature of the studio where we stick to the
core of the old curriculum and forms.
I plan to be doing this stuff when I'm well into old age, because I
know that keeping the body and mind active is a key to a happy life. I see
my grandfather at 87 and he's just as active as ever, working with his
hands and his brain every day. Martial arts is my thing, so I plan to
be kicking and punching for a long, long time.
