Q: What inspired you to start studying martial arts?
I began martial arts training as a child, it was the perfect opportunity for my parents to enroll me in an activity that would teach some control and self-discipline, while at the same time providing an outlet for all of that ‘young child energy’.
Q: How has the study of martial arts changed your life?
Martial arts and Tae Kwon Do in particular, teach many lessons. For myself, the confidence I have gained from both learning and teaching at Yong Studios have been huge factors in my life. The fact that I know I am capable of achieving my goals if I put in the work is something I learned in the studio progressing from belt to belt. This knowledge has helped me with school where I am confident in the quality of my work and events such as giving presentations of speeches is no longer as difficult as it once was. The discipline I have learned at the studio is a huge factor in my life. When I was younger I was kind of a fat, non-athletic kid. The discipline I learned from studying Tae Kwon Do, allowed me to change my lifestyle and become who I am today.
Q: What do you enjoy most about teaching martial arts?
I still remember the first time a student (who I had taught her first day of class) tested for her black belt. It is extremely gratifying to witness the time and effort we invest in students when they achieve their goals. I feel a strong sense of pride in partaking in each student’s path of success in martial arts.
Q: What keeps you here?
The sense of belonging and community I feel at the studio is what keeps me here. From my fellow students whose hard work and effort motivates me to do better to my fellow instructors who continually challenge me to do more and be better. Even the students I teach who look up to me and respect me. All of these things make the studio a place where I am never bored, a place where I can always improve myself and help others to do the same. The studio is a place where I have made lifelong friends, and a place where I continue to make new ones.
